There is a saying that nothing is certain but death and taxes, and two reminders of that truism are coming up in the middle of this month.
Federal tax returns are due on April 17th.
And, National Healthcare Decisions Day will be on April 16th.
Here’s Dr. Trent Barnhard of OSF St. Anthony Home Care Services in Rockford, Illinois:
“Living will, advance directive, power of attorney … these terms can be confusing, but it is so important that everyone understands them.
Monday, April 16, is National Healthcare Decisions Day — a day to encourage adults to communicate their end-of-life care wishes to family and health care providers. Having discussions about dying wishes is hard, but making medical decisions for people without their input is even harder.
Oftentimes, people believe their families know their care wishes, but they may not. It is best to document care wishes while everyone is healthy and thinking clearly. Accidents and serious illness can occur at any time.”
I have covered many of these subjects – and more – in my booklet “Final Business.” It’s available here on the Sacred Vigil site. If you’re with a hospice or home care agency, you’ll find these booklets contain valuable information for patients and their families.
And, if you or a family member are facing end-of-life issues right now, “Final Business” is also available as an ebook download from Amazon.
